About SCC
Presenting contemporary art in craft media by international, national and regional artists since 1971, the Society for Contemporary Craft offers cutting edge exhibitions focused on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of classes, community outreach programs and a fantastic retail store.
The Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) remains one of the nation’s only non-profit institutions focused on contemporary craft. Since. SCC has organized more than 140 thematic exhibitions featuring work by more than 1400 nationally and internationally renowned artists. Additionally, SCC’s support of culturally diverse and underrepresented groups has resulted in many exhibitions by self-taught, Native American, Korean, and African- American artists.
SCC strives to engage visitors in the creative process through contemporary craft and design. Therefore, interpretive programs, lectures, performances and weekend activities are offered in conjunction with each exhibition. SCC charges no admission and is open Monday through Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm. Experience the changing exhibitions at SCC’s Satellite Gallery, located in the Steel Plaza T-Station Lobby at One Mellon Bank Center, one of the most accessible public spaces in the city of Pittsburgh. The Satellite Gallery is open daily through midnight.
Because families are a highly valued audience, SCC offers the Drop In Studio. This free, hands-on activity space for children and adults remains open during all public hours. The Drop In Studio encourages visitors to participate in a hands-on art activity that have been developed by artists to tie-in to our special exhibitions.
SCC strives to create exhibitions that incorporate at least one of four key themes:
Urban Experience—art reflecting the unusual materials, culture and energy of the urban neighborhood.
Art and the Environment—work revealing the connections between contemporary art and nature.
Art and Process—contemporary crafts highlighting the techniques, inspirations and unique visions underlying the creation of each artist’s work.
Crossing Cultural Boundaries—concepts challenging audiences to expand their thinking through multicultural and non-mainstream art.
