I choose functional jewelry as the motivation to delve into the process I love. I start with a piece of metal and roll it down thinner and thinner until it becomes crispy. I doodle and draw then chase the drawing into the surface, creating lines through a series of dots. Each time I punch metal it creates a small bump. I file that bump away. I am left with a thin and delicate piece of perforated metal. I might use bits and pieces of thread, flattened wire or monofilament as additional surface layers. The aesthetic decisions I make are driven by a composite of intuition, a compulsive need to set and follow rules, and the occasional moment of spontaneity. The repetitive work absorbs me. The world falls away and I retreat into a quiet, meditative and comforting space in my mind.
