Mark Blaustein began his career as a dentist. In 1979, with no prior experience, he attended a woodturning class in Vermont and fell in love with the craft. In 1991, his affection for woodturning brought about his enrollment as a full time woodworking and furniture design student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Courses in sculpture and metalwork also enriched and influenced his work, leading him away from the traditional turned form to the exploration of a more sculptural and expressive approach. “Whether this exploration is long and torturous or fairly quick,” he says, “the exhilaration of finding the solution keeps me going. The process has become as important to
me as the final object.”
