Christian uses the wood burls that grow within the roots of Pacific Madrone trees, which often weigh many thousands of pounds, and have a very high water content (up to 20% of the volume). He takes advantage of and encourages the changes that occur as the wood dries. In this series called “Books,” he cuts the wood from green blocks with a band saw and uses a microwave to dry the wood from the inside out. Each form is a direct result of the underlying grain structure. Unlike working with dry and stable wood, Christian’s process makes him feel like he is working together with the material, rather than trying to subdue or control it.
