One of a rare handful of non profit institutions in the country with a distinct focus on contemporary craft as art, the Society for Contemporary Craft’s spacious, well-designed facility houses a professional exhibition gallery, space for educational programs that serve various segments of the community, and a distinct commercial gallery for art-made works.  Since 1986, SCC has organized more than 140 thematic exhibitions featuring work by more than 1400 nationally and internationally recognized artists.  SCC’s focus on multi-cultural diversity and non-mainstream art has resulted in exhibitions of art by self-taught, Native American, Korean, and African- American artists.

To engage visitors in the creative process through contemporary craft and design, interpretive programs, lectures, performances and weekend activities are offered in conjunction with each exhibition.  SCC charges no admission and approximately 30,000 individuals visit our Smallman Street facility each year.   An additional 100,000+ see the changing exhibitions at the satellite gallery in the subway station at One Mellon Bank Center, one of the most accessible public spaces in the city of Pittsburgh.
