Whisper-Romance: Day and Night
Jiyoung Chung
(September 5 - November 30, 2009)
Using the traditional Korean technique of joomchi, a paper felting process in which separate pieces of handmade paper are joined through agitation, Chung crafts delicate, simply-composed canvases that demonstrate extraordinary depth and skill. With a background in traditional Oriental painting, as well as western art training at schools in the United States, the artist demonstrates an exceptional sensitivity to color and pattern. Working with this unique technique, Chung pushes materials to their limit through folding, rubbing, squeezing and repeating until she has achieved the desired look and feel. Indicative of the artist’s tedious handiwork are the highly tactile surfaces that undulate with wrinkles and creases. Without the use of needle or thread, she creates irregular, layered works with elliptical openings that remind one of the punctures produced by stitching.
Currently living in Virginia, Jiyoung Chung began her studies in Oriental painting at the Duckwon High School in Seoul, Korea. In 2002, Chung earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, RI. After graduating from RISD the artist received an MFA in printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She has exhibited widely including in Korea, Finland and the USA.
The satellite gallery is located in the “T” station lobby of One Mellon Bank Center and is open daily through midnight.
