Nan Banta Schumm

Schumm has been producing shibori scarves for more than 20 years. Shibori is a Japanese term used to describe a multitude of resist dyeing techniques. Her colorful textured silk scarves are dyed a base color, then pleated to create resists (areas where the dye solutions can not easily penetrate). The pleated cloth is then “discharged” in a solution that removes some of the base dye. It is then overdyed. The flowing patterns develop in an abundance of subtle colors.
