Program Announcement – Drum Circle and Exhibition with Maxwell Kofi Donkor

Internationally known master drummer and sculptor, Maxwell Kofi Donkor will lead a drum circle at the Society for Contemporary Craft on Friday, July 26 starting at 7 p.m. Also included in the event will be a potluck dinner.

Kofi has been drumming and performing for over 30 years, having learned the essential drumming skills at his grandfather’s knee in Ghana, West Africa. Since arriving in the United States in 1992, Kofi has been teaching art to children and adults and has been instrumental in forming numerous drum circles in Eastern Pennsylvania. The type of drumming that Kofi does not only "penetrates the body, mind, soul, and spirit, but also brings a balance into a person; it is, in fact, the heartbeat of humanity, balancing the negative and positive energies of the everyday hectic life in the community." His drum circles are a place of understanding, support, and growth for people of all ages and all levels of drumming.

As part of the SCC’s summer Artist + Kids program, Identity and History: The Story Behind the Image, Kofi is leading 10 students from East Liberty’s Reizenstein Middle School in a three-week residency in SCC’s studio. Based on traditional Asanti tools, students are using wood and clay to create thrones and linguist staffs depicting personal narratives. On July 31st from 6-7 p.m. at SCC the residency concludes with a free community celebration of the thrones, staffs, and clothing created for the program.

A collection of Kofi’s work including masks, reliefs, and drums is currently on display until August 19 at SCC’s One Mellon Bank Center Gallery, located in the "T" station lobby, open daily until midnight.
