Ceramic Artist, Lydia C. Thompson creates work that revolves around human existence and its imprint on the earth. Her images combine figurative, natural forms from the landscape and non-western architecture, evoking emotions of how humanity defines itself cross-culturally. Thompson’s work is featured in SCC’s exhibition COLOR: TEN African American Artists. Join Thompson as she discusses her travels in Nigeria and Europe and shares how her journeys have helped her to further explore her own cultural connections here in the United States. Thompson will discuss how cultural migration has influenced her work.

Director's Talk: A History of Craft [DT001]

In the decades since World War II, artists working with craft media have ventured into new avenues of creativity. Working in traditional craft media-ceramic, glass, wood, metal, fiber, and found materials - these individucals have broken fresh ground in contemporary art, bringing their work before a wider public. Previously distinct divisions between craft media have disappeared, with artists blurring the lines between categories, moving freely from one material to another, and mixing media in exciting ways that reflect orininality and innovation. Join Society for Contemporary Craft Executive Director Janet McCall for this introductory lecture featuring a slide overview of the evolution of the craft movement, and a brief look at key issues as well as the seminal figures who have made important contributions to the movement's development.

In the early 1800s settlers in the Southwest recycled tin from old food containers to make beautiful decorative items for their homes and churches. Artist Kerry Ishizaki will introduce you to motifs and techniques for making tin refrigerator magnets, lending a contemporary twist to this historic art form.

Enameling Techniques for Jewelry Making [M032]

Add gold to your metal work using the simple and inexpensive process of Kumboo. A traditional Asian technique, Kumboo allows gold to be overlaid on silver using heat without the need for solder or flux. Metalsmith Sera Swan invites you to learn this simple process, while making a stunning pair of earrings or pendant of your own design.

Paper Sculpture Narratives [PB002]

Paper collage is a direct technique to create an image. Lydia Thompson uses colored papers and foam board to create graphic paper sculpture narrative. This workshop will demonstrate her paper relief construction techniques. Students will receive step-by-step instructions of how to transfer their two-dimensional images into relief paper sculpture.

Making fold & Dye Papers [PB003]

In this fun class students will fold, pleat, twist and bind papers to prepare them for Japanese Orizomegami dyeing. Then using brushes, squeeze bottles and dip dyeing techniques they will produce papers with beautiful kaleidoscopic designs. This paper-decorating technique, which originated in Japan hundreds of years ago, will help students create luminescent papers for use in card making, folding screens, book arts and other paper art projects.

Watercolor Marbling [PB004]

The mysteries of this once-secret ancient craft are explored in this introductory marbling workshop. Students will learn how to apply color using whisks and brushes, and then perform magic with marbling tools to create stunning classical patterns and Persian fantasy designs. Splashers and precision-oriented students will both take home gorgeous papers to frame or use in bookmaking, card design and other paper projects. Students will explore many techniques including patterns made with a stylus and marbling with combs and rakes.

Japanese Gift Giving
Gift giving is a rich and elaborate tradition in Japanese culture. The presentation of gifts is an important part of that tradition. In these workshops you will discover a whole new level of expressive gift presentation. In the morning workshop, bring a small gift to wrap using traditional Japanese techniques. In the afternoon, create individualized paper gift boxes.

Gocco is a wonderful process for producing multiple prints of a single design. In this workshop, each participant will design and print a set of 25-50 holiday cards, including one screen for the outer image and one screen for the text of the cards. Create four stunning and practical Japanese style bound books. Students will use the four hole, hemp leaf, tortoise shell and kani styles of bookbinding. Traditional papers will be used to form books that are ideal for poems, artwork or diaries.

Gourd & Metal Jewelry: An Alchemical Marriage of Media [MM019]

This jewelry class combines two media - gourds and metal - and elevates them to more than the sum of their parts. Students will oxidize, drill and further empower the metal with hand-hammered words and then embellish a gourd fragment to create a unique pin or pendant. This class also includes an opportunity to tour SCC’s current COLOR exhibition featuring Mixed Media Artist Michele Tejuola Turner’s carved painted gourds.

Join William Accorsi, nationally renowned artist and children’s book author for a day of fun and creative exploration. In this one-day hands-on workshop, nationally known ceramist, Bernadette Curran will share a playful approach to clay by transforming simple pottery shapes into zoomorphic forms. From quick gesture drawings on paper to more imposing construction techniques in clay, the spontaneity will allow for both functional and sculptural solutions. Bernadette will discuss glazing techniques to enhance the surface, however, projects will be bisque-fired only.

Gocco & the Art of the Self-Portrait [MM022]

In this class, self-portraits will form the basis for an exploration of the Gocco printing process. Assemblage is the art of creating three dimensional constructions using found objects. Join artist Robert Villamagna to create sculptural forms from tin cans, metal signs and other metal objects. Scoops, Spoons & Honey Dippers: An Introduction to Woodturning [W012]

This is a great workshop for beginners to learn basic spindle techniques. Students will make a honey dipper, then a sugar scoop, a salt scoop, and finally a shallow spoon. Students will also experiment with spindle gouges and the skew.

This workshop is a great introduction to turning bowls for beginners as well as more experienced turners. Woodworker Tadao Arimoto guides students one-on-one in the traditional Japanese woodworking methods and tools used to create furniture. Learn how to properly use Japanese hand tools such as chisels, planes and saws and how to construct different joineries. Students will complete their choice of a collapsible stool or small shoji screen.

Join regional woodturner, Craig Smith, for an introduction to woodturning. Just in time for the holiday season, students will explore the process of making simple candlesticks on the lathe. The instructor will introduce students to the basic components of various types of lathes, safety considerations, tools and their uses. Students will learn a few basic cuts, and finally apply this knowledge to turn a simple candlestick. No previous turning experience is required. No materials fee.

Many countries and cultures celebrate using masks. Tina Brewer will illustrate the histories of this art form with a slide show and talk. Students will receive a basic form to begin a mask and embellish it using collage, embroidery, and beading to reflect a culture or theme of their choice.

Learn the ins and outs of incorporating photos transferred onto fabric into functional objects. Starting with your own photo transfers, construct the project of your choice: a cloth photo album, wall hanging or pillow. Basic sewing skills are helpful. The class includes a tour of SCC’s current COLOR exhibition, which features beautiful examples of fiber artist, June Gaddy’s garments exemplifying this photo-transfer process.

Wheat Woven Wreath Ornaments [F036]

Learn the traditional craft of wheat weaving. Using a spiral weave technique, you will create one or more small wreath ornaments suitable for hanging on a tree, wall or in a window for decoration. Stitching Meditation: The Art of Hand Embroidery [F037]

The purpose of a spiritual practice is to quiet the mind and identify one’s true nature. Hand embroidery is a type of fiber art used as a means of creative expression. Hand Felted Wool Mittens & Pouches [F039]

Students will transform colorful wool fibers into three-dimensional items, such as mittens, berets and pouches, using warm, soapy water and gentle rubbing. During the felting process, students create surface designs and manipulate the felt into seamless three-dimensional forms. Students will create an object that will be distinctly unique to their own sense of style and expression. This class is suitable for all skill levels.

Hand Made Hearth Brooms [F040]

Learn the unique and historic craft of broom making. Hand made brooms are excellent sweepers and make great gifts for weddings and housewarmings. Using broom corn, linen cord and a few simple tools, students will make a round hearth broom. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Andinkra Tote Bags [F041]

Andinkra cloth has been in use in Africa in Ghana and Côte’ d’Ivoire for hundreds of years. Today, symbols on the cloth are used as decorative motifs on everything from architecture to fabric. Join contemporary Quilter Tina Brewer to explore the history of these fascinating symbols and use them to embellish a simple tote bag. The symbols will be applied using embroidery and beading.
